Microdermabrasion is one of the newer skin rejuvenating techniques to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Favoured by celebrities such as Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law, we describe microdermabrasion as “skin polishing followed by vacuum cleaning”!
There are many types of microdermabrasion machines in use in the UK, however Temple Aesthetics use the Pulsar Microdermabrasion system. This machine, which has a diamond-tipped hand-piece and a much deeper effect on the skin, can only be operated by a trained doctor or nurse. Even so, the treatment session is short, with minimal side effects and no “downtime”.
Although just one treatment is the ideal way to give your skin a lift for a special occasion, for increased benefits, we recommend a series of treatments. For best results microdermabrasion is recommended to be used often in conjunction with other treatments, such as chemical peels, Omnilux light therapy and cosmeceutical skin products.
How long does treatment take?
Treatment can take as little as 10 minutes. Our usual treatment time is 30-45 minutes. If including the anti-ageing soothing mask then allow about an hour.. Stretch marks can take as long as 2 hours to treat. (although this is an issue that will be discussed when assessing your skincare needs at the initial consultation

The results are immediate and just one treatment can give your skin a lift for a special occasion. The full benefits from a course of treatments/ combination package of treatments will be apparent from the start of the treatments with continuing improvemnts over time and after the treatment course has finished.

Microdermabrasion is a non-permanent treatment. The procedure can be repeated every week or so for a series of 5 to 10 sessions. Maintenance treatments can then be scheduled every three or four months.
How many treatments will I require?
A course of 5-10 treatments is recommended to achieve the best results but even a single treatment will improve the appearance of your skin.

By following a recommended skincare regime tailored to your requirements (and as recommended following a detailed VISIA® skin analysis) and combining it with other treatments such as Omnilux® and Priori skin peels.
Is treatment painful?
The treatment is usually painless.
What is microdermabrasion and how does it work?
Microdermabrasion is a skin freshening technique that helps to repair damage caused to the skin by sun and the effects of ageing. It is effective in reducing fine lines, crow’s feet, blocked pores, millia (white spots under the skin), age spots and acne scars. The process stimulates the collagen in the skin which encourages the production of new cells in the deeper layers resulting in a more even texture to the surface. The hand piece uses a diamond tip wand to gently polish the skin to give a younger fresher surface. The loosened skin particles, are then immediately “vacuumed” away. Once the outer layer of skin has been removed, the layers of skin beneath then increase their production of new skin cells to renew the surface layer. As a result the appearance of the skin and the circulation are improved.
Is microdermabrasion safe?
Yes
Is an allergy test necessary?
No.
Are there any side effects?
Microdermabrasion is a mild treatment causing minimal damage to the surface of the skin. Some patients experience some tightness and redness of the skin, which may last for an hour or two following treatment. On occasions, redness or streaking of the skin may continue for a day or so. Sensitive skin around the eyes can become swollen, but cold compresses will help to get rid of this. Deeper treatments aimed at scar tissue or stretch marks may produce some spotting of blood, with healing taking around 3 - 4 days. There is a very small risk of mild pigment changes to the skin that generally clear up within a month, and the risk of any scarring is very rare with this procedure. As with all skincare treatments and products that we use at Temple Aesthetics we strongly recommend the use of sun protection following treatments.
Are there different versions of microdermabrasion?
Yes, we use the Pulsar system which, with its diamond tipped hand-piece, has a deeper effect on the skin. There are other systems which use crystals to exfoliate the skin but these are predominantly used by beauty therapists rather than nursing and medical staff.
Is microdermabrasion suitable for all skin?
Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin colours. It is not suitable for deeper wrinkles and scars, deep hyper-pigmentation problems or broken veins in the skin. Microdermabrasion is not suitable for someone with an active skin infection (such as cold sores), a history of problems with skin healing, or those who have taken Isotretinoin (roaccutane) within the last 12 months.
What skin problems can microdermabrasion treat?
Acne, acne scarring, fine lines around the eyes, Comedone (black heads), cellulite, hard skin on hands or soles of feet., stretch marks, lines and wrinkles and sun damage.
Where can microdermabrasion be used?
Microdermabrasion can be used on all areas of the face. Some stretch marks respond well to this treatment as does cellulite and hard skin. Some people experience a reduction in the appearance of brown age spots.
